Mental Wellness — Because Your Mind and Body Are Not Separate Problems

Compassionate, evidence-based mental health care integrated with your primary care — at our Lansdowne and Reston locations.

Mental health is health. Not a separate category. Not a lesser priority. Not something to address only when things fall apart. At VPMC, mental wellness is woven into the fabric of how we care for every patient — because unaddressed anxiety, depression, and chronic stress don’t just affect how you feel. They affect your blood pressure, your blood sugar, your sleep, your weight, your immune system, and your ability to manage every other condition we treat.

We believe that a primary care practice that ignores mental health is only doing half its job.

What We Address

Our care team screens for and manages a full range of mental health conditions in adults, including depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, stress-related conditions, insomnia and sleep disorders, ADHD in adults, grief and adjustment disorders, and the emotional dimensions of chronic illness — because a diabetes diagnosis, a cancer scare, or a debilitating chronic condition carries a psychological weight that deserves clinical attention alongside the physical one.

For our geriatric patients, we pay particular attention to the ways mental health presents differently in older adults — where depression may look like fatigue, withdrawal, or unexplained physical complaints rather than sadness, and where anxiety may be dismissed as personality rather than recognized as a treatable condition.

Our Approach

Mental wellness care at VPMC begins with honest, unhurried conversation. Every annual wellness visit includes validated screening for depression and anxiety — PHQ-9 and GAD-7 — because identifying a problem is the first step to treating it. When concerns are identified, your care team creates a treatment plan that may include medication management, evidence-based behavioral strategies, mindfulness and stress management techniques, and referrals to therapists, psychiatrists, or behavioral health specialists for patients who need deeper therapeutic support.

We don’t replace mental health specialists — we complement them. For patients already working with a therapist or psychiatrist, VPMC serves as the medical anchor of their mental health care, managing medications, monitoring physical health impacts, and ensuring that every member of the care team is working from the same picture.

The Connection Between Mental and Physical Health

Chronic stress elevates cortisol, raises blood pressure, disrupts sleep, and drives inflammation. Depression is associated with significantly higher rates of heart disease, diabetes complications, and poor surgical outcomes. Anxiety disorders affect eating patterns, medication adherence, and the likelihood that a patient will follow through on preventive care. These are not soft observations — they are well-documented clinical realities that shape how we approach every patient’s care.

When you feel better mentally, your physical health follows. When your physical health improves, your mental resilience strengthens. At VPMC, we treat both — together, intentionally, and without judgment.
